Coby TFTV1022 10.2-Inch LCD TV

Wonderful small screen TV
This Coby 10 inch screen is perfect for my kitchen counter. Takes up so little foot print. True it takes a few seconds before the picture is displayed. The tuner is super – when I select channel 4 (NBC), one channel at a time is shone. There are 4 different channel 4’s – all belonging to NBC. Now I am getting the signal from the air.

Hoped for better
I have been very disappointed in this little TV. I purchased it to replace an analogue TV that I have used in the kitchen for many years. Unfortunately, I inadvertently purchased an outdoor antenna, rather than indoor. Even so, I attached it to the TV and it did make a difference, but I still don’t get even the number of channels I was receiving on the analogue set (the latter with NO antenna).

The picture is bright but I have never been able to adjust the color properly; it looks a little faded and washed out. (I have a large-screen LCD TV in another room and it has a gorgeous picture – but it is hooked up to cable.)

The closed captioning is so small that you have to be within a couple of feet of the set in order to read it.

The sound on mine is definitely tinny and it gets worse as volume increases, making for a very ‘fine line’ between hearing and annoyance!

I hope the channel pick-up will improve when the changeover is made to digital.

If you buy it (and I realize that many people have been happy with it) be sure to get an appropriate antenna if you aren’t hooking up to cable. I’m going to get an indoor antenna and try again, but my expectations are not high.

Audiovox VE927 9-Inch LCD Drop-Down TV

The ultra slim 9″ LCD drop down TV with built-in slot load DVD player (VE927) features 16:9 aspect ratio, ATSC/NTSC tuner, AM/FM clock radio, stereo speakers, and remote control. It plays DVD, CD, CDR, CDRW.
Pretty darn good…
We are happy with this unit, but as others have mentioned the competition for this type of product is pretty weak, so it’s only better than others out there.
If we were going to watch whole DVDs in this unit – one’s we hadn’t seen before – we’d be pretty distressed that the 16×9 picture is stuck at a wide screen aspect ratio, so that something that should be 16×9 is kinda squished top to bottom. Adjustments, other than switching to 4×3, have no affect on the built in screen. But we don’t really care ’cause we’re going to watch new DVDs in another room anyway. This TV is for company and comfort in the kitchen and it’s just fine for that.
The radio is very nice – we love NPR in the morning – but the tuning is funky like others have said.
The unit detected lots and lots of channels on the cable and supposedly some are in HD – but who can tell on a 9″ screen?
If it will just keep working for at least a couple of years we’ll be happy.
Customer Service Was Helpful
Our unit had some initial problems but they were solved by Audiovox tech support. Set up and installation are straight forward. The footprint of the TV works well with a standard above counter cabinet and results in a nice clean look.
TV
Our TV has an excellent picture with a cable connection. The unit has about a 3-5 sec sound delay after you see the picture on start up and on channel change. The remote is small with a lot of mini buttons on limited real estate. The TV is not perfect but it meets our needs and overall is a good value. This unit was for a second home. We are now buying one for our year around house.

TECH SUPPORT
Our unit worked as advertised for about three weeks. After a power outage we couldn’t get any sound, however the picture was fine. After a 10 minute hold I got a knowledgeable tech support representative. He thought there was a reasonable chance the unit was toast, so he did two things. He gave me instructions on how to do a hard restart / reboot of the TV and he connected me with customer support so I could get a return authorization (without starting over all over in their system). After getting my return authorization I played with the reboot and got my unit working. The family now has 6+months use with the unit without further problems.

Save your box. They have a repair or replace return program that sounded reasonable. Fortunately I haven’t needed to try it yet.

Excellent TV
TV is very light weight, so easy for my wife to move from room to room. We are taking it on a road trip today to use as our portable DVD player. Picture clarity is excellent.
question/comment
I wonder if the reason the channel switching was slow has something to do with it being an energy star rated item? Or maybe the batteries in the remote were demo batteries and needed to be replaced?

Nice picture, weak tuner
I bought this to replace my old battery 5″ CRT emergency TV. My hope was that I could somehow get a local digital channel which would play on it without power, using a rabbit ears. I managed to get it to do that. With the supplied antenna, though I live in a major metropolitan area about 8 miles east of the city and 17 miles northeast of most of the transmitters, I can get no digital signals, and a half dozen or so analog, all fuzzy. With something like the TERK HD rabbit ears, with the power turned off to it, I can get one or two local digitals (but NOT the one station I wanted to get). So, I can say it passed the emergency test.

On the other hand, the picture is outstanding and near HD, comparable to one of those portable wide screen DVD players. Playing time seems fairly robust, too, plus it has a car connector.

I give it a couple of negatives for not having an apparent real time on-screen signal strength meter, so you have no way of aiming the antenna easily. The included antenna does not telescope inside the case for easy storage, either. And you cannot just tune to some arbitrary station. There has to be enough signal for the AUTOSCAN to pick up a trace. So if you autoscan with the supplied antenna, it can find very few channels. Best thing to do is hook it up to the best antenna you can find somewhere and then autoscan, then take it home and see if you can tune in a signal there.

I’m also hoping after February 2009 that once every station is up to full digital power and on their permanent assigned frequencies this unit will work much better.
Nice, but……..
This is no doubt a good value, but be aware that digital signals are inherently ‘weak’ in that they require lots of power for transmission. And at this time (pre-digital switch over) most digital signals are not strong enough to carry more than a few miles. So… if like me you live more than 20 miles away from the nearest transmitting tower, you won’t get any digital reception. And the analog reception on this set is about the same (or a little worse) than a cheap analog portable – I get the same one station that my old $30 set gets. Reception is enhanced by using a better set of ‘rabbit ears’ especially one that has a ‘booster’ that you plug in. But that eliminates the main use for a tv like this – to watch while traveling or camping. I’ll keep mine and hope that stations boost their signals post-switch over. If I had it to do over again, though I would have waited until then and read the reviews.
